What is Pamphlet Palooza?

We're pulling back the curtain and giving you a peek inside the Handmade Book Club for one weekend only, July 18th - 21st.

We'll sew a stack of simple booklets then bind them together to create one funky, chunky journal that you'll decorate with ribbons, fabric, buttons and beads. As a bonus, it lays flat when open, so you can use it for drawing, journaling, painting or mix media work.

Why Join the Workshop?

  • Perfect for Beginners: No prior experience? No problem! Our class is crafted specifically for beginners, ensuring that everyone can create a beautiful, handcrafted book.
  • Complete a Project in a Weekend: Life is busy, and we get it. That’s why our class is designed to be completed in just one weekend. You’ll have a finished book to show off by Sunday evening!
  • Use What You Already Have: No need for a shopping trip! Our project uses common household items, so you can dive right in without any extra hassle or expense.
  • Learn at Your Own Pace: With our pre-recorded videos, you can watch, pause, and replay the lessons as many times as you need. Speed up or slow down the videos to match your learning pace.
  • Personalized Support: Have questions? My team and I are here to help! You can reach out via comments under the video or email and get the answers you need.
  • Experience Community with Live Zoom Calls: Join our three live Zoom calls to connect with fellow bookbinding enthusiasts. Share your progress, ask questions, and be part of a supportive community.

Tool & Supply List

Here's everything you'll need for the Pamphlet Palooza class.

Supplies

  • Paper to create booklets/signatures
    • Use paper of your choice in the size of your choice*
    • You will create as many or few booklets as you wish
    • In the video I create 12 booklets with 8 folded pages in each
    • The paper I use is Mohawk Superfine Smooth 70lb text weight (118gsm)
  • *The number of papers in each booklet depends upon the thickness of the paper and there’s no right or wrong answer. Here are some suggestions:
    • Mixed media paper: 4-6 sheets
    • Watercolor paper: 2-4 sheets
    • Thin sketch paper: 10+ sheets
  • 1 cover for each booklet
    • Covers measure the same height as pages and 0.5” (6mm) wider
    • Use a thicker paper for the first and last booklet, such as watercolor, mixed media or handmade paper
    • Cover paper can have a pattern on one side or both ie single double- sided
  • Waxed Linen Thread
    • A piece that measures 3 x height of booklet for each one
    • Use a variety of colors if you wish
  • If you don’t have waxed linen thread, you can add beeswax to embroidery floss or #5 pearl cotton
  • PVA or other white glue, such as tacky glue.  In a pinch you can use matt medium or modge podge but a glue stick won’t be strong enough.
  • Scraps of ribbon, fabric and fibers
  • Scrap paper for gluing and making the template
  • Beads (optional)

Tools

  • Bone folder
  • Awl
  • Punching cradle or large  book
  • Sharp knife
  • Sewing needle
  • Large tapestry needle for weaving
  • Ruler
  • Glue brush

Yours could be next!

Meet Ali

Years ago I learned about handmade books, and ever since then I’ve been hooked. I love creating new designs, learning about different techniques and expanding my collection of paper. But what I love most about bookmaking is the community.

Through Vintage Page Designs and the Handmade Book Club, I’ve met thousands of other passionate bookmakers, mixed media artists and crafters. We all share a love of book arts just for the joy of it.

I believe that bookbinding and book arts are for everyone, regardless of skill level or equipment. All you need is a little creativity and, of course, paper!
